Spatial Audio: A Key Element for Truly Immersive VR Experiences
Over the last week, I’ve come across the term “spatial audio,” and believe me when I say that the sounds we hear are critical to creating the multi-sensory environment required for compelling immersive worlds.
Let’s take a quick look at spatial audio, how it’s becoming more popular, and how it improves virtual reality experiences.
What is Spatial Audio?
Spatial audio is an important component of truly immersive VR and metaverse experiences. When you listen to music, spatial sound gives you the impression that you are watching a live performance. It is essentially a grouping of audio technologies that produce multi-sensory and immersive sound.
According to some studies, the market for spatial audio will reach around $12.97 billion by 2026, and many leading companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Sony are already getting involved. The increasing accessibility and affordability of spatial sound solutions are further accelerating their adoption across industries and in the consumer market. Spatial sound will undoubtedly become the norm in virtual reality and the metaverse.
Here are a few of the major reasons why companies interested in XR should think about making a spatial audio investment.
- Enhanced Wellbeing- There’s a chance that the cognitive benefits of spatial audio could help those with hearing loss. Other emerging research suggests that it may help to reduce stress in a variety of enviroment.
- Improved User and Customer- Spatial audio enhances our everyday interactions by adding a sense of “reality” and authenticity to the digital world. The experience of consumers and users of XR technologies like augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality can be greatly enhanced by spatial audio (VR).
- Mimic true experiences from the real world- Through immersive technology, it is possible to give users the impression that they are sitting in a real space using spatial audio. For instance, in a virtual meeting space, it would be possible to identify the speaker based on both their voice and the source of the audio.
Spatial audio could quickly establish itself as a key tool for enabling improved experiences at every stage of the customer and employee journey as the metaverse continues to open the door for a greater variety of extended reality interactions.
